Women who were previously diagnosed with osteoporosis and have received dental implants from tooth loss may experience a higher overall quality of life. This study comes directly from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine. It was published in the International Journal of Dentistry.
This study was based off of 237 participants who have missing teeth but have a variety of circumstances. There were participants who had dental implants, and they were compared against those who are missing teeth and do not have dental implants. The other participants have a variety of circumstances and may use removable dentures, partial restorations, or no fixed dental restoration at all. The participants’ emotional health, sexual health, and overall quality of life were also taken into consideration when making a concluding determination. The study ultimately found that dental implants seem to positively influence a woman’s quality of life.
Osteoporosis dramatically affects more women than men. Osteoporosis (“porous bone”) causes bone breakdown or loss of bone, causing patients to be at high risk for bone break or fracture. Osteoporosis occurs in patients for various reasons, including hormonal changes, loss of estrogen, aging, or a deficiency of calcium or vitamin D.
You may have heard of osteoporosis, but did you know the disease has extreme implications for your oral health? You may be surprised to learn that bone loss in the jaw can lead to tooth loss and a weakened jaw bone that is unable to support dentures. Patients who have osteoporosis in their jaw will likely need a bone graft procedure to remedy the bone loss.
Dental implants are secure and permanently fixed to the mouth, which is convenient for those who do not want to worry about the hassle of removable dentures. This is done by the simple mechanics that adhere together to create a brand new tooth. The dental implant itself is just a small, medical-grade titanium post that goes into the jaw bone and will integrate with the bone, offering a secure base. Next, an abutment is attached to the implant and then the custom-designed crown is placed on top of the abutment. Dental implants are a very popular option over more temporary options, like removable dentures or partial restorations, due to their stability, ease of use, and security.
So what are the best ways to avoid tooth loss? And how do you avoid osteoporosis? While dental implants are a popular and satisfactory option for many, preventative measures are recommended through routine oral hygiene and maintaining a health plan for your overall health are your best options.
